When I was a teenager in the early 2000s, my friends and I all bought and shared one tube of DuWop Cosmetics’ Lip Venom. (Hey, it was expensive for us.) The beauty standard of lush, full, “kissable” lips is nothing new. Luckily though, the best lip plumpers on the market have improved in terms of formula, texture and feel. No longer is it only about the sting—although there’s still some of that—but also about the health of the lips.
Recent launches include lip plumpers with SPF, ones with nourishing vitamins and peptides and glosses with tons of color. The addition of hydrating hyaluronic acid makes lips look fuller, as well. Most use mild irritants such as capsicum (an ingredient found in chili peppers), cinnamon or menthol to bring blood flow to the lips and give them a temporary full look. Some use bee venom, which is humanely extracted from bees but keeps the product from being vegan. Regardless, the results can be a fun way to fake a full pout without lip fillers.
As for me, well, I did end up getting a little bit of lip filler and it makes me like using lip plumping gloss even more. Below, some of my favorites on the market that actually really work. Just be careful if you have a history of allergy to any skin products.

Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper
Another OG, Too Faced has updated its decade-old formula to be even more intense and even more plumping. The gloss is available in five shades (including clear) and uses capsaicin derived from hot peppers to bring the heat. Jojoba oil gives lips hydration and shine.

More cream lipstick than gloss, this high-shine formula gives lips a pleasant cooling feel, while vitamins A and E hydrate. Plus, there are a whopping 20 colors.
Sephora Collection.

This non-sticky gloss contains sunflower seed oil, ginger root oil and peppermint oil to hydrate and plump. Some say it’s even a dupe for Dior’s version.
Milk Makeup.

This tinted gloss uses spicy Sichuan pepper to plump lips but the overall effect is still plush and hydrating.
