The Top Fashion Trends To Try For Fall 2021, According To The Runways

Bestie, I don’t want to be the one to tell you this, but it’s time to retire that neutral aesthetic you’ve been rocking since 2019. And toss that matching sweatsuit in the trash, too, while you’re at it. According to the top runway fashion trends of the season, going bold and bright is pretty much the only option—and TBH, I’m all for it.

Here’s a little pro tip from me to you: If you want to be a step ahead of the top trends, always look to next season’s biggest identifiers. No, that doesn’t mean you should be wearing wool trousers or heavy coats in spring and summer, but it does mean you can mimic next season’s top colors, patterns and silhouettes. This way, you’ll already be wearing what’s cool before your friends even realize they have to have it, too. For all they know, you’re the one that started the damn trend in the first place!

That said, I’m all about giving credit where credit is due, so let’s look to the designers actually starting this year’s top trends. After pouring over looks from the Fall/Winter 2021 runways and pulling the finest from New York, London, Paris and Milan, I’ve identified four must-try trends absolutely everyone should be rocking this season.

First up, channel your inner Big Bird with feathery statement pieces. Or, if you prefer a different texture that’s just as ethereal, tulle will be your new BFF. For a slightly cozier look, sweater dresses are officially the new cardigans—and when it comes to picking a colorway, ditch summer’s pastels and maximalist prints for solid, saturated hues that pack a punch.

Birds Of A Feather

Mark Fast; 16Arlington; Elie Saab/iMaxTree.

Faux fur is in, but feathers are really in, giving us just enough fluff to ease into colder temps and still feel chic. Mark Fast and 16Arlington showed maximalist feathered looks at London Fashion Week, while Ellie Saab showed off some pastel pink feathered details over in Paris. If this trend intimidates you, start small with a few tufts before you graduate to Big Bird status.

Dalva Sandal in Ultra Pink Satin

There’s no shame in starting small and chic with a feathered accessory or two! These satin party heels by Nina Shoes come in pink, yellow, black, red and white, so I won’t blame you if you invest in a few different shades.

Fool For Tulle

Act No.1; Molly Goddard; Bora Aksu/iMaxTree.

From cottagecore comes princesscore, an equally-dreamy look that’s ditched the nature vibes and loaded up on luxury instead. Girly tulle moments were all over the runway this season, from sheer minis at Act N°1 to layered looks at Molly Goddard and frilly details at Bora Aksu. Yes, this does mean it’s time to finally but a Selkie dress.

The Puff Dress

When I first saw these Selkies make waves, I was convinced they were only for summer. But this dark floral version paired with sheer tights and combat boots? Yes, a thousand times yes (and FYI, they have extended sizing up to 5x on their website!)

Up The Saturation

Christian Siriano; Claudia Li; Balmain/iMaxTree.

Somewhere between muted pastels and garish neons sits this season’s top color trend of highly-saturated shades. From punchy greens to passionate blues, the more vibrant and rich the hue, the better. Spotted on the runway at Christian Siriano, Prabal Gurung and Claudia Li, saturated colors are in—which means nothing dull will do.

Elasticated Waist Woven Blazer in Blue

Out of all the saturated hues popping up, vibrant blues are my all-time favorites. In a world of boring black blazers, be this unique blue PLT pick with exaggerated sleeve detail. Bonus points if you pair it with those feathery pink heels I mentioned earlier.

Sweater Weather

Ulla Johnson; Staud; Chanel/iMaxTree.

When choosing your knitwear for the season, skip the cardigan and go straight for the sweater dress! Whether you opt for a short, form-fitting look a la Chanel or a chunky, oversized knit like the Ulla Johnson take above, there’s no wrong way to enjoy sweater weather over the next few months. And yes, I did buy that Staud one for myself already. The heart-shaped cut-out got me!

Castle Dress in Black Chevron

I bought this Staud dress in the yellow striped version up above, but if you want something a little more wearable, you’re in luck: It also comes in black.
