Outer Banks fans have had a hunch for weeks that the stars who play Sarah and John B on the Netflix series have split in real life. So, did Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline break up for real? While we hate to break it to you, it does look like the rumors are true.
Multiple sources confirmed to both E! News and People that Chase and Madelyn broke up after one year together on Tuesday, November 2. The pair, who celebrated their first anniversary in April 2021, reportedly broke things off “months” ago, according to an insider who spoke to People. “Madelyn and Chase are no longer together,” the source told the site. “They were trying to work things out privately but broke up a couple of months ago.” Another insider added at the time, “They are definitely broken up.”
Fans first began to speculate that Chase and Madelyn broke up in September 2021, after a series of anonymous sources claimed on social media that the pair were through. In a submission to celebrity gossip account Deux Moi on Instagram, one individual suggested that the couple were originally supposed to attend the 2021 Met Gala as one of the event’s “It couples,” but ultimately skipped out on the event at the last minute. Another claimed that the pair had split “weeks ago,” and that Chase was previously spotted at a party where he “kept flirting” and “looked very much single.”
Despite the breakup rumors, Madelyn, 23, took to social media that same month to celebrate Chase’s 29th birthday in a series of Instagram Stories. “Happiest birthday to you, nerd,” she captioned a series of photos of her Outer Banks co-star, along with a funny video of him jumping on a pillow. Stokes re-shared the video to his Instagram Story with a reply. “Thank you for exposing my bedtime routine,” he joked. While the posts seemed to indicate that the OBX stars were still together, they neither confirmed nor denied the rumors outright at the time.
Later that month, however, the pair fueled rumors of a split once again when Madelyn was spotted spending time with fellow Netflix star, Ross Butler. The Outer Banks actress joined the 13 Reasons Why star, 31, in Italy for Milan Fashion Week, where they were spotted sitting next to each other at the Salvatore Ferragamo show on September 25, according to Hollywood Life. Ross, for his part, posted a photo of himself and Madelyn from the show to his Instagram account, which led some fans to believe the pair attended the event as a couple. TMZ also published a video of Ross dancing with Madelyn at a restaurant shortly after their Fashion Week appearance. In the clip, which you can view here, Ross can be seen affectionately twirling Madelyn around.
The Riverdale actor, for his part, shut down the dating rumors when asked about his relationship with Madelyn by a TMZ reporter on Friday, October 22. He revealed that Madelyn was “just a friend” at the time. When asked about his recent night out dancing with the Netflix actress, Ross replied, “I dance with a lot of people.” The reporter went on to ask for confirmation that Ross and Madelyn aren’t an item, to which he confirmed, “Nope. Just friends.” While it’s unclear if that’s still the case, one thing’s certain: Fans will only be catching on-screen glimmers of romance between Madelyn and Chase from now on in Outer Banks.
